What is Robotics & Automation?

Robotics engineers design, program and test robots: industrial arms in factories, autonomous mobile robots in warehouses, drones, agricultural robots, surgical systems and, increasingly, humanoids. The field combines mechanical design, electronics, control theory and software — especially perception (computer vision), motion planning and, more and more, AI models that let robots learn skills. Industrial automation (PLCs, robotic cells) is the most common job path; AI-driven 'physical AI' is the most hyped.

Why it's trending now

  • 'Physical AI' became a major investment theme in 2025–26: foundation models for robots (e.g. NVIDIA Isaac GR00T, Google's Gemini Robotics) and well-funded humanoid start-ups are hiring robotics software engineers.
  • Labour shortages and reshoring push manufacturers and warehouses to automate, keeping demand high for automation and controls engineers.
  • BLS projects mechanical engineers — the occupation that includes many robotics engineers — to grow 11% from 2025 to 2035, much faster than average.
  • In Bangladesh, the garment (RMG) and manufacturing sectors are adopting automation to stay competitive, and university robotics teams have built a strong talent pipeline through international competitions.
