What is AR/VR & Spatial Computing?

AR (augmented reality) places digital content on top of the real world — through phone cameras or smart glasses. VR (virtual reality) puts users inside a fully digital world through a headset. 'Spatial computing' is the umbrella term for apps that understand 3D space, hands, eyes and voice. Developers in this field build training simulations, games, product visualisers, medical and architecture tools, and increasingly AI-powered assistants on smart glasses. The core skills are real-time 3D development (Unity, Unreal), 3D maths and interaction design.

Why it's trending now

  • Big platforms are competing on spatial devices: Apple Vision Pro (visionOS), Meta Quest headsets and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses, and Google's Android XR platform with Samsung's Galaxy XR headset (launched October 2025).
  • AI assistants on camera-equipped smart glasses are a new product category that needs developers who combine computer vision, AI and spatial UX.
  • Enterprises use XR for training, remote assistance and digital twins in manufacturing, healthcare and construction, which is steadier than consumer gaming demand.
  • The skills transfer well: Unity and Unreal developers can move between games, XR, simulation and digital-twin work — useful protection in a still-maturing market.
