What is Prompt & Context Engineering?

Prompt engineering is the skill of getting consistent, high-quality results from AI models by writing clear instructions, giving good examples, and supplying the right context (documents, data, tool results). In 2025 the industry started calling the broader version 'context engineering': deciding exactly what information a model sees at each step. Honest note: standalone 'Prompt Engineer' job titles are becoming rarer — the skill is now expected inside many roles (AI engineer, content, support operations, product, marketing, data). That makes it one of the most useful entry points into AI work, especially for non-programmers.

Why it's trending now

  • LinkedIn reported in its Jobs on the Rise 2026 coverage that most hiring leaders now prefer candidates who are skilled with AI tools over more experienced peers without those skills.
  • Companies deploying AI assistants and agents need people who can write system prompts, build evaluation sets and fix failure cases — often called AI trainers, AI content specialists or LLM evaluators.
  • The work shifted from clever one-line prompts to engineering the full context: retrieval, memory, tool descriptions and examples — a skill that transfers to AI engineering.
  • It has the lowest barrier to entry of any AI field: you can start with a free chat tool and a spreadsheet of test cases.
