What is AI Governance & Responsible AI?

AI governance professionals make sure organisations build and use AI responsibly: they assess risks (bias, privacy, security, misuse), set internal policies, run evaluations and red-teaming, document systems, and keep the company compliant with new laws like the EU AI Act. The field welcomes people from many backgrounds — computer science, data, law, policy, risk and compliance — and comes in technical flavours (evaluations, red-teaming, fairness testing) and non-technical ones (policy, audits, compliance programmes).

Why it's trending now

  • The EU AI Act is being phased in: bans on certain AI practices applied from February 2025, general-purpose AI model obligations from August 2025, and most high-risk system rules are scheduled from August 2026 onward (with ongoing EU debate about simplifying or delaying some deadlines).
  • The IAPP AI Governance Profession Report 2025 found organisations rapidly creating AI-governance roles, and IAPP salary research reports a median of about $151,800 for AI-governance-focused professionals.
  • Standards such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and ISO/IEC 42001 (AI management systems) give companies a structure to follow — and they need people to implement and audit it.
  • As agents take real actions (payments, emails, code changes), companies need people who can evaluate safety, set guardrails and investigate incidents.
