What is Fintech Engineering?
Fintech engineers build the software behind digital money: mobile wallets, payment gateways, online banking, lending and credit scoring, remittances, stock and insurance platforms. The work combines strong back-end engineering with extra rules: transactions must never be lost or duplicated, systems must be secure and auditable, and regulation (KYC, anti-money-laundering, data protection) shapes the design. Bangladesh is a strong market for this field thanks to mobile financial services (MFS) like bKash and Nagad, and the move toward digital banking.
Why it's trending now
- Fintech engineers rank second among the fastest-growing jobs in the WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025.
- Real-time payments, open banking APIs and stablecoin-based settlement are changing how money moves, and banks need engineers to modernise legacy systems.
- AI is being applied to fraud detection, credit scoring and customer support — creating hybrid fintech + data roles.
- Bangladesh Bank data shows about 239 million registered mobile financial services (MFS) accounts as of February 2025, and the central bank has introduced a digital-bank licensing framework — creating strong local demand for payment and banking engineers.

Portfolio project ideas
Build these in order. Put each one on GitHub with a clear README and a short demo.
Personal finance tracker API
easyA REST API for income/expense tracking with categories, monthly summaries and CSV export.
Loan EMI and interest calculator
easyA web tool that calculates loan schedules (flat vs reducing balance) with clear explanations — a common local need.
Double-entry wallet service
mediumA wallet with accounts, transfers and an immutable double-entry ledger that stays consistent under concurrent requests.
Payment gateway integration with webhooks
mediumAccept payments in a sandbox, handle webhooks idempotently, and reconcile payment status with orders.
Real-time fraud detection pipeline
hardStream transactions through Kafka, apply rule-based and ML fraud scoring, block or flag suspicious transfers and show alerts in a dashboard.
10 interview questions
Try answering out loud first, then open the short model answer.
1Why should you never store money as a floating-point number?
Floats can't represent many decimal values exactly, causing rounding errors. Store amounts as integers in the smallest unit (e.g. paisa/cents) or use a decimal type.
2What is idempotency and why does it matter in payments?
Repeating the same request has the same effect as doing it once. With idempotency keys, network retries won't charge a customer twice.
3Explain double-entry bookkeeping.
Every transaction records equal debits and credits across at least two accounts, so the books always balance and every movement is traceable.
4What are ACID properties?
Atomicity (all or nothing), Consistency (valid state), Isolation (concurrent transactions don't interfere) and Durability (committed data survives failures).
5How would you prevent double spending in a wallet?
Use database transactions with row-level locks or optimistic concurrency on the balance, check funds inside the transaction, and use idempotency keys for requests.
6What is reconciliation?
Comparing your internal records with external statements (bank, gateway, MFS) to find and resolve mismatches such as missing or duplicate transactions.
7What is KYC and AML?
Know Your Customer verifies identity; Anti-Money Laundering monitors transactions for suspicious patterns and reports them to authorities as required by law.
8How do you handle a payment where the gateway times out?
Don't assume failure. Mark it pending, query the gateway status or wait for a webhook, and only then confirm or reverse — never blindly retry without idempotency.
9What is PCI DSS?
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard — security requirements for any system that stores, processes or transmits card data. Tokenisation reduces scope.
10What is the saga pattern?
A way to manage distributed transactions as a series of local transactions with compensating actions to undo steps if a later step fails.
Resume bullet templates
Replace the [brackets] with your real numbers. Quantified results stand out to recruiters.
Built a double-entry ledger service processing [N] transactions/day with zero balance discrepancies over [period].
Integrated [N] payment providers with idempotent webhooks, reducing failed/duplicate payments by [X]%.
Developed a real-time fraud rule engine that flagged [X]% of fraudulent transactions with a [Y]% false-positive rate.
Automated daily reconciliation across [N] bank and MFS partners, cutting manual effort by [X] hours per week.
Improved payment API p99 latency from [X] ms to [Y] ms while maintaining [99.9X]% availability.
Formula: action verb + what you built + tools + measurable result. Only claim numbers you can explain in an interview.
