What is Machine Learning Engineering?

Machine learning (ML) engineers turn data into models that make predictions — fraud scores, product recommendations, demand forecasts, image recognition, speech and language models — and then put those models into production so they run reliably at scale. The job sits between data science (experimenting with models) and software engineering (shipping robust systems), and increasingly includes MLOps: versioning, monitoring and retraining models over time.

Why it's trending now

  • The WEF Future of Jobs Report 2025 lists AI and machine learning specialists among the three fastest-growing jobs to 2030.
  • Companies that adopted generative AI now need engineers who can fine-tune, evaluate and serve models efficiently, not just call an API.
  • The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects computer and information research scientists — the category that includes many ML researchers — to grow 22% from 2025 to 2035.
  • Cheaper GPUs in the cloud and open-weight models (Llama, Qwen, Gemma, Mistral) let smaller companies train and host their own models, widening demand beyond Big Tech.
