What is AI Agent Engineering?
AI agent engineers build software where a large language model (LLM) does more than chat: it decides which tools to call (APIs, databases, browsers, code), keeps memory between steps, and works toward a goal with checks and human approval where needed. Think of it as backend engineering where one of the components is a reasoning model, and your job is to make it reliable, safe, observable and cheap enough to run in production.
Why it's trending now
- LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list ranked AI engineer as the fastest-growing role, and companies are moving from chatbots to agents that complete multi-step tasks.
- Open standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP) made it easy to connect models to tools and data; MCP is supported across major AI platforms and was donated to the Linux Foundation's new Agentic AI Foundation in December 2025.
- Every major cloud and model vendor now ships an agent SDK (OpenAI Agents SDK, Google ADK, Claude Agent SDK, Microsoft Agent Framework), so demand has spread beyond AI labs to banks, hospitals, SaaS and consulting firms.
- Employers need engineers who can evaluate, secure and monitor agents — skills that most developers have not yet learned, which keeps the talent gap wide.
Job roles
Common job titles you'll see in listings, and what each one actually does.
AI Agent Engineer
Designs and ships agent workflows: tool definitions, planning loops, memory, guardrails and human-in-the-loop approval steps.
AI / LLM Application Engineer
Integrates LLMs into products with retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), structured outputs and streaming UIs.
Agent Platform Engineer
Builds the internal platform agents run on: MCP servers, sandboxes, auth, rate limiting, cost tracking and observability.
AI Evaluation Engineer
Creates test sets, automated graders and regression suites so teams can measure agent quality before and after each change.
Forward-Deployed / Solutions Engineer (AI)
Works directly with customers to design and deploy agents for their workflows, then feeds lessons back to the product team.
Conversational AI Developer
Builds voice and chat agents for support, sales and operations, connecting them to CRMs, ticketing and telephony.

Build these in order. Put each one on GitHub with a clear README and a short demo.
Personal docs Q&A bot
easyA RAG chatbot that answers questions about your university notes or a company handbook and cites the source passage.
Job-hunt assistant agent
easyAn agent that reads a job description, compares it to your CV and drafts a tailored cover letter plus a skills-gap list.
MCP server for a real API
mediumBuild and publish an MCP server for a public API (e.g. weather, GitHub issues, bus schedules) and use it from an AI client.
Customer-support agent with evals
mediumA support agent that looks up orders in a mock database, issues refunds only after human approval, and ships with a 50-case evaluation suite.
Multi-agent research pipeline
hardA planner agent splits a research question, worker agents search and summarise in parallel, and a critic agent fact-checks the final report. Include tracing, cost reports and injection defences.
10 interview questions
Try answering out loud first, then open the short model answer.
1What is the difference between a chatbot and an AI agent?
A chatbot replies to messages. An agent pursues a goal: it plans, calls tools, observes results and loops until the task is done or it needs a human, so it can take actions, not just produce text.
2How does function/tool calling work?
You describe tools with names and JSON schemas. The model returns a structured request to call a tool with arguments; your code runs it, sends the result back, and the model continues with that new information.
3What is RAG and when would you use it instead of fine-tuning?
Retrieval-augmented generation fetches relevant documents at query time and adds them to the prompt. Use it when knowledge changes often or must be cited; fine-tune when you need a consistent style or behaviour, not fresh facts.
4What is the Model Context Protocol (MCP)?
An open protocol that standardises how AI applications connect to tools and data. A server exposes tools, resources and prompts; any MCP-compatible client can use them without custom integration code.
5How do you evaluate an agent?
Build a dataset of realistic tasks with expected outcomes, score final results and intermediate steps (right tool, right arguments), use code checks where possible and LLM-as-judge where needed, and run it on every change to catch regressions.
6What is prompt injection and how do you defend against it?
Malicious instructions hidden in user input or retrieved content that try to hijack the agent. Defences include treating external content as data, least-privilege tools, allow-lists, output validation and human approval for sensitive actions.
7How would you reduce the cost of an agent in production?
Route easy steps to smaller models, cache prompts and results, trim context, cap loop iterations, batch requests where possible and monitor cost per task with tracing.
8When should you use multiple agents instead of one?
Only when tasks are truly separable or need different tools/permissions. Multi-agent systems add latency, cost and failure points, so start with one well-designed agent and split only when evals show a benefit.
9How do you handle agent memory?
Short-term memory is the conversation/state passed each step; long-term memory is stored externally (database or vector store) and retrieved when relevant. Summarise old context to stay within the context window.
10What would you log for an agent in production?
Every model call (input, output, tokens, latency, model version), every tool call with arguments and results, errors, user feedback and final outcome — with sensitive data redacted.

Salary & demand
Ranges vary by company, city, experience and negotiation. Always check the linked sources for the latest figures.
Bangladesh
Tk 18,345 – Tk 100,918
gross per month
Paylab does not yet publish a separate range for AI engineers in Bangladesh, so this uses the Software Engineer range (10th–90th percentile, gross monthly). Engineers with proven LLM/agent work at product companies and remote-first teams commonly sit at the top of this range or above it.
Demand
Early but growing: software firms serving foreign clients and local fintech/telecom teams are adding LLM features. Few postings say 'agent engineer' yet — look for 'AI engineer', 'LLM engineer' or 'Python + LLM'.
Remote (from Bangladesh)
$35,000 – $90,000
per year
Estimate for Bangladesh-based engineers working remotely for foreign companies. Arc reports a $41,465 average for remote developers in Bangladesh and $69,548 for seniors; specialised AI roles tend to pay above the developer average.
Demand
Very high. Startups worldwide hire remote AI engineers who can show working agents and evals; a public portfolio matters more than a degree.
Global benchmark
$134,040
US median, Software Developers, QA Analysts & Testers (BLS, 2025)
BLS has no separate 'AI engineer' category. Specialist AI engineers at tech companies usually earn well above this median; check Levels.fyi for company-level data. Projected growth: +10% (2025–35, much faster than average).
Demand
Very high. AI engineer tops LinkedIn's 2026 fastest-growing jobs list, and the WEF expects AI/ML specialists to be among the fastest-growing roles to 2030.
How to read these numbers: Bangladesh ranges are Paylab's 10th–90th percentile gross monthly salaries (top product companies often pay more). Remote ranges are CareerPulse estimates informed by Arc's Bangladesh remote-developer data. Global figures are US medians from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025 data, 2025–35 projections) unless stated otherwise.
