What is Cybersecurity?
Cybersecurity professionals defend networks, applications, cloud systems and data from attackers. Some work on defence (monitoring alerts in a Security Operations Centre, responding to incidents), some on offence (ethical hacking and penetration testing to find weaknesses first), and some on governance (risk, compliance and security policy). With AI helping attackers write phishing emails and malware faster, organisations need more skilled defenders — and people who can secure AI systems themselves.
Why it's trending now
- BLS projects information security analyst jobs to grow 21% from 2025 to 2035, with a 2025 US median wage of $129,180.
- ISC2's 2025 Cybersecurity Workforce Study found 95% of respondents report at least one skills gap on their team, and AI and cloud security are the most needed skills.
- Ransomware, data breaches and AI-powered phishing keep rising, and new regulations require companies to report and manage cyber risk.
- In Bangladesh, banks, MFS providers and government digital services are investing in security operations after high-profile incidents and growing digital payments.
Job roles
Common job titles you'll see in listings, and what each one actually does.
SOC Analyst
Monitors security alerts, investigates suspicious activity and escalates real incidents — the most common entry-level security job.
Penetration Tester / Ethical Hacker
Legally attacks systems and applications to find vulnerabilities and writes reports with fixes.
Cloud Security Engineer
Secures AWS/Azure/GCP environments: identity, network controls, misconfiguration detection and compliance.
Incident Responder / DFIR Analyst
Handles breaches end to end: containment, forensic analysis, recovery and lessons learned.
Application Security (AppSec) Engineer
Works with developers on secure code review, threat modelling and security testing in CI/CD pipelines.
GRC Analyst
Manages governance, risk and compliance — policies, audits, ISO 27001, PCI DSS and vendor risk.

Entry-level listings frequently mention CompTIA Security+, ISC2 CC or vendor SIEM experience; senior roles mention CISSP, OSCP or cloud security certifications.
30/60/90-day roadmap
About 1–2 hours a day. Tick goals as you complete them.
Days 1–30
Foundations
Milestone: Comfortable explaining how a web request travels across a network and where attacks happen.
Days 31–60
Defence and attack basics
Milestone: A documented home lab with at least three detection rules and screenshots.
Days 61–90
Specialise and certify
Milestone: A certification (or exam booked), CTF write-ups on a blog and an updated CV.

Portfolio project ideas
Build these in order. Put each one on GitHub with a clear README and a short demo.
Home security lab
easySet up Kali Linux and a vulnerable VM (e.g. Metasploitable) in VirtualBox and document a safe, isolated testing environment.
Phishing email analyser
easyA Python script that parses email headers and links, flags suspicious signs and produces a short report.
SIEM detection lab
mediumSend Windows and Linux logs to Splunk or Elastic, simulate attacks with Atomic Red Team and write detections mapped to MITRE ATT&CK.
Web app penetration test report
mediumTest OWASP Juice Shop, find and exploit vulnerabilities, and write a professional report with risk ratings and fixes.
Cloud security posture scanner
hardBuild a tool that scans an AWS account (your own free-tier lab) for misconfigurations — public buckets, open security groups, weak IAM — and suggests fixes.
10 interview questions
Try answering out loud first, then open the short model answer.
1What is the CIA triad?
Confidentiality (only authorised access), Integrity (data is accurate and unaltered) and Availability (systems work when needed) — the core goals of security.
2Difference between encryption and hashing?
Encryption is reversible with a key and protects confidentiality. Hashing is one-way, producing a fixed-length digest used to verify integrity or store passwords (with salt).
3What is SQL injection and how do you prevent it?
Inserting malicious SQL into input fields to manipulate a database. Prevent it with parameterised queries, input validation, least-privilege DB accounts and an ORM.
4What happens when you type a URL into a browser?
DNS resolves the domain to an IP, the browser opens a TCP connection, performs a TLS handshake for HTTPS, sends an HTTP request and renders the response.
5What is a false positive in a SOC?
An alert that flags benign activity as malicious. Too many waste analyst time, so detections are tuned to balance false positives and missed attacks.
6Describe the incident response lifecycle.
Preparation, detection and analysis, containment, eradication, recovery, and post-incident lessons learned (NIST).
7What is the principle of least privilege?
Users and systems get only the minimum access needed to do their job, limiting damage if an account is compromised.
8Symmetric vs asymmetric encryption?
Symmetric uses one shared key (fast, e.g. AES). Asymmetric uses a public/private key pair (e.g. RSA, ECC) for key exchange and signatures; TLS uses both.
9What is MITRE ATT&CK used for?
A knowledge base of real attacker tactics and techniques, used to map detections, find coverage gaps and describe attacks consistently.
10How would you secure a web login page?
HTTPS, strong password hashing (bcrypt/Argon2), rate limiting and lockout, MFA, secure session cookies, CSRF protection and logging of failed attempts.
Resume bullet templates
Replace the [brackets] with your real numbers. Quantified results stand out to recruiters.
Triaged an average of [N] SIEM alerts per shift, escalating [N] confirmed incidents and reducing mean time to detect by [X]%.
Wrote [N] detection rules mapped to MITRE ATT&CK in [Splunk/Sentinel], cutting false positives by [X]%.
Conducted penetration tests on [N] web applications, reporting [N] high-severity vulnerabilities that were remediated before release.
Hardened [cloud environment] by enforcing least-privilege IAM and fixing [N] misconfigurations identified by [tool].
Led [ISO 27001 / PCI DSS] audit preparation, closing [N] control gaps and achieving certification on schedule.
Formula: action verb + what you built + tools + measurable result. Only claim numbers you can explain in an interview.

Bangladesh
Tk 18,506 – Tk 65,903
gross per month
Paylab IT Security Specialist range (10th–90th percentile, gross monthly). Experienced security leads at banks, MFS providers and multinationals earn above this range.
Demand
High and rising in banks, MFS, telecom and government digital services. SOC analyst and security-operations roles are the main entry points.
Remote (from Bangladesh)
$25,000 – $80,000
per year
Estimate. Remote security work from Bangladesh is common in pentesting, bug bounties and managed SOC services; certifications (OSCP, cloud security) and public write-ups push rates up. Arc's Bangladesh remote developer average is $41,465.
Demand
Good for pentesters, bug-bounty hunters and managed-security service staff. Fully remote SOC roles often require time-zone overlap.
Global benchmark
$129,180
US median, Information Security Analysts (BLS, 2025)
Specialised roles such as cloud security engineers and red teamers typically earn above this median. Projected growth: +21% (2025–35, much faster than average).
Demand
Very high. 21% projected growth in the US and widespread skills gaps reported by ISC2.
How to read these numbers: Bangladesh ranges are Paylab's 10th–90th percentile gross monthly salaries (top product companies often pay more). Remote ranges are CareerPulse estimates informed by Arc's Bangladesh remote-developer data. Global figures are US medians from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025 data, 2025–35 projections) unless stated otherwise.
