What is Cloud Engineering?
Cloud engineers design and operate the infrastructure that modern apps run on: virtual machines, containers, serverless functions, databases, networks and storage on platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP). They automate infrastructure with code, keep systems secure and available, and control costs. As AI workloads move to the cloud, cloud engineers also manage GPU capacity, data platforms and AI services.
Why it's trending now
- The Reveal IT Talent Survey for 2026 names cloud specialists among the most in-demand tech roles, alongside AI engineers, cybersecurity professionals and data experts.
- AI adoption drives record cloud spending: companies need engineers to provision GPUs, data pipelines and managed AI services securely.
- BLS counts cloud architects within computer network architects — a 2025 median of $134,050 with 8% projected growth (2025–35), much faster than average.
- Many Bangladeshi companies and government services are migrating from on-premise servers to cloud or hybrid setups, and offshore firms manage cloud for foreign clients.

Portfolio project ideas
Build these in order. Put each one on GitHub with a clear README and a short demo.
Static portfolio site on the cloud
easyHost your CV site on S3 + CloudFront (or Azure Static Web Apps) with HTTPS and a custom domain.
Serverless visitor counter
easyAdd an API (Lambda/Functions + a NoSQL table) that counts site visitors — the core of the Cloud Resume Challenge.
Terraform three-tier web app
mediumProvision a VPC, load balancer, autoscaling app servers and a managed database entirely with Terraform.
Cloud cost dashboard
mediumPull billing data, tag resources by project and build a dashboard that flags idle or oversized resources.
Multi-region, highly available platform
hardDeploy a containerised app across two regions on Kubernetes with automated failover, backups, secrets management and a disaster-recovery runbook.
10 interview questions
Try answering out loud first, then open the short model answer.
1IaaS vs PaaS vs SaaS?
IaaS gives raw infrastructure (VMs, networks); PaaS gives a managed platform to deploy code (App Service, Cloud Run); SaaS is finished software (Gmail, Salesforce). Each step up means less to manage but less control.
2What is a VPC and a subnet?
A VPC is your private, isolated network in the cloud. Subnets divide it into IP ranges; public subnets route to the internet, private subnets do not.
3What is infrastructure as code and why use it?
Defining infrastructure in version-controlled files (e.g. Terraform). It makes environments repeatable, reviewable, testable and easy to recreate.
4How do you make an application highly available?
Run multiple instances across availability zones behind a load balancer, use managed databases with replicas, health checks, autoscaling and automated failover.
5Vertical vs horizontal scaling?
Vertical adds more CPU/RAM to one machine; horizontal adds more machines. Horizontal scaling is preferred for resilience and elasticity.
6How do you secure an S3 bucket / storage account?
Block public access, use least-privilege IAM policies, enable encryption and versioning, turn on access logging and use private endpoints where possible.
7What is a security group vs a network ACL?
Security groups are stateful firewalls attached to resources; network ACLs are stateless rules applied at the subnet level.
8How would you reduce a cloud bill?
Rightsize instances, shut down idle resources, use autoscaling, reserved or savings plans for steady workloads, spot instances for flexible jobs, and storage lifecycle policies.
9What is the difference between RTO and RPO?
RTO is how quickly you must restore service after a failure; RPO is how much data loss (in time) is acceptable. They drive backup and DR design.
10When would you choose serverless over containers?
Serverless suits spiky, event-driven workloads with little ops overhead; containers suit long-running services, custom runtimes or steady high traffic where cost and control matter.
Resume bullet templates
Replace the [brackets] with your real numbers. Quantified results stand out to recruiters.
Migrated [N] on-premise services to [AWS/Azure] using Terraform, reducing infrastructure cost by [X]% and deployment time from [X] days to [Y] minutes.
Designed a multi-AZ architecture that raised availability from [X]% to [99.9X]% for an application serving [N] users.
